The aromatic oils in Juniper berries classify it as antimicrobial and diuretic, which are useful in recurring urinary tract infections and edema. The warm stimulating qualities treat cold dampness, and are contraindicated in hot irritable states. Juniper berries also act on the mucosa of the lungs and digestive tract. It can be used to treat indigestion, malnutrition, asthma, cough, phlegm, wheezing, and other cold damp conditions of the lungs. It can be a cleansing, warming, and strengthening ally when needed in female conditions to treat PMS, cramps, cold limbs, and water retention. The oil used externally can benefit arthritis and stiff joints and muscles made worse by cold damp weather.
