Calendula is surprisingly effective at treating many conditions. Most famous as a great wound healer, it is used topically as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and vulnerary (promotes healing). Internally, it is therapeutic for swollen glands and infections where edema is present. For the female reproductive system, it is useful as an emmenagogue, and usually eases dysmenorrhea. The high flavonoid content (astaxanthin, carotenoids, etc) is very beneficial for eye health, not only for treating deteriorating sight, but also in cases of redness and irritation. In cases of fever, its diaphoretic action is one of the most effective. It has a long standing use as an immune tonic in Europe, lessening lingering stagnation and infections to lighten the toxic load before winter.
Sensitivity to plants of the Asteraceae family.
