Description
Known as “Indian Ginseng”, Ashwagandha has been used as a rasayana, or rejuvenative, to restore vitality and prolong life in India for centuries. Modern studies indicate significant immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and anxiety reducing properties. This is a true tonic traditionally used to strengthen the body, promote deep sleep, improve mental performance, increase libido, and ease painful joints. Ashwagandha fits the three definitive qualifications as an adaptogen: nontoxic/generally safe, stimulates nonspecific resistance to stress, and has a normalizing effect on the entire system. Known as an intelligent herb that can either promote energy or relaxation as needed by the individual, it has been shown to decrease cortisol, the stress hormone. The common name Ashwagandha translates to “the strength of a horse,” while the latin, somnifera, means “restful sleep”.
